Working with choirs

‘How To Improve Your Singing’ session
We make a list of weaknesses, eg: running out of breath too quickly; difficulty with high notes/low notes; ‘slippage’ (ie not staying on pitch if singing a cappella); how to sing loudly without pushing; how to sing quietly without becoming breathy and ‘weak’; etc etc and then address these issues one by one. I would demonstrate exercises to help tackle the individual problems and offer lots of ideas for vocal workouts and warm-ups.

Miniature Songs
In addition to various vocal exercises which tackle aspects of good technique, I could include some ‘miniature songs’ – ie 8- 12 bars long, quick to teach in harmony – for demonstration purposes. (These can be in any style from Gospel Blues to Classical to Pop to Musical Theatre.  I’d probably write some especially for the session – you could let me know what your preferred styles are). Jazz is my thing, so could include some rhythm/improvisation ideas as well.

Mini-Masterclasses
A number of volunteer singers could have a solo slot – they sing a song (max 3 mins long – I am happy to accompany as I’m a pianist, but if there’s a pianist on hand, great) and I then work with the singer for 10 mins max, tackling any technique issues. Useful for demonstrating to the group how a simple adjustment can be made to really improve an individual’s singing quality. I’d involve the whole group in between the short sessions, so everyone can benefit from trying out the suggestions.

Choirs own songs
I collaborate very closely with the conductor – not stepping on their interpretation territory but rather  working on the vocal quality/overall sound of the choir

Vocal Health
Persistent vocal issue s– eg hoarseness, any concerns around limited range, etc, we can also address this. The best way to look after your voice, any concerns around aging voices. I can easily include this in ‘How To Improve Your Singing’ session.
